Can my employer fire me for any reason in California?
Answer
California is an at-will state, but there are major exceptions. Your employer cannot fire you because of your race, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristic. They also cannot fire you in retaliation for filing a complaint, taking protected leave, reporting illegal activity, or exercising a legal right. Most terminations that feel wrong are worth reviewing with an attorney.
