Can I be fired for being pregnant or taking maternity leave in California?
Answer
No. Terminating or demoting an employee because of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions is illegal under FEHA. California also provides Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) of up to 4 months, and CFRA provides an additional 12 weeks of baby bonding leave — meaning eligible employees can take up to 7 months of protected leave. Any adverse action during or after these leaves is suspect.
